Government owned muscle cars
A plane that is so hard to land that a chase car had to be employed to aid the pilot in touching down, that’s what it takes when we’re talking about a Lockheed U-2 spy plane. The U-2 is a high altitude spy plane that was built in the mid-1950’s and being such is very sleek which doesn’t leave a lot of real estate for things like wheels, or proper landing gear. The U-2 has a front wheel, a rear wheel and some skid plates on the ends of the wings — think of it as a really expensive bicycle with a cockpit and wings.
In order to land these birds a fellow U-2 pilot straps himself into the drivers seat of a high performance muscle car, be it a Camaro, Mustang, or Corvette and keeps in radio contact with the pilot letting him know just how his approach is and how far he is off the deck. Talk about exhilarating, it’s a treat enough to be able to blast down some tarmac at full speed, but to be chasing a jet at the same time? WOW.
