Hemi name to disappear from Chrysler vernacular again?

[ 0 ] July 8, 2010 |

It sounds like Chrysler is pulling a General Motors and will be removing corporate references to HEMI to portray a “greener” image. The 5.7L v8 will be called exactly that, without the historical reference to the horsepower laden, tire melting HEMI that once was. But, the engine will still be available, as a HEMI, in some Dodge cars and Ram trucks.

Apparently Chrysler is being short sighted with this move, Ford has proven that you can have your cake and eat it, too. The 2011 Mustang has moved back to a 5.0L platform that made it popular, and has also brought out a powerful V6 option that they’ve shown can get awesome fuel economy. Throwing away a valuable marketing tool like the HEMI name may cost Chrysler customers as there won’t be such an appeal to certain demographics.

It will be interesting to see if Chrysler backpedals on this misstep or if they continue to down this road in their HEMI 5.7L V8.
