2011 shall be the Year of the Recall
Chinese New Year for 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit, we’d like to predict that in the automotive realm that it will be the Year of the Recall.
2010 brought a ton of recalls, spurred on mainly by Toyota and their wide reaching accelerator problems but it also brought a number of other recalls from a wide array of manufacturers for a wide array of problems. Amazingly enough the 17.2 million vehicles recalled overall was a far reach from the recall record of 2000, fueled by the Ford/Firestone tire recall, which helped push the overall number to 24.3 million.
Toyota led the way in 2010 with 17 recalls, but it also opened the eyes of lawmakers and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) and changed how recalls are handled and what will trigger a recall.
So expect 2011 to be riddled with all sorts of recalls as manufacturers be sure and cover their behinds in fear from being sent to the airport to be groped by an army of TSA agents. Okay, so we made up that last part, but we’re positive that the recalls will be numerous but to the advantage of the consumer.
