Alas, what could have been… The new Stratos is a no go
This is something that definitely brings a tear to my eye. We had a Lancia Stratos when I was growing up and it is one of my fondest memories of my childhood. It was so much fun to ride in and when I close my eyes I can still hear that engine howling. So it is with definite sadness that I found out that plans for the rebirth of the Stratos appear to be dead on the slab.
It appeared for a while as if the Stratos had a strong chance of being reborn after the prototype received such a strong response. Hell, even Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo did some laps in the car. However, the Stratos prototype was built with the aid of Ferrari and their final decision in not wanting anything to do with a vehicle that may become a competitor killed the deal. There are some rumblings that Renault may be interested in picking up the torch but with the world economy what it is, and the Stratos being a niche vehicle, it is hard to see this dream ever leaving the pillow.
