NHTSA Outlines New Tire Rating System
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a division of the US Dept. of Transportation, unveiled a framework that would create a ratings system for replacement vehicles tires by multiple categories. These categories would include; fuel economy, safety, and durability.
The NHTSA says “This will also enable consumers to see the tradeoffs they may be facing between fuel efficiency, safety (i.e., wet traction), and durability (i.e. treadwear life), and how the balance of these factors may differ from tire to tire.” As a consumer, I feel that the more information you have access to the better decisions you can make and that is exactly what this system will provide.
