The Zandy Wagon, owned by Zan and Randy Martin, proprietors of Martin & Company Advertising (M&C) is a one of a kind 1957 4-door Chevy Wagon coated in Sherwin Williams custom ZANDY red. This big red Diva represents a complete frame off restoration with lots of original styling cues and a few slick surprises to capture your attention.
Martin & Company Advertising is a full service agency specializing in the automotive aftermarket, now in its 15th year of operations. To celebrate this milestone, Zan and Randy purchased their favorite classic in its original state from an owner with good intentions to restore the vehicle. The car sat neglected in a field for years before M&C discovered the vehicle and purchased it with the intent of a full restoration in time for Hot Rod Power Tour 2008.
Rather than going completely stock, the Zandy Wagon (named appropriately by combining Zan and Randy) was developed with a classic appearance inside and out while incorporating modern performance upgrades while keeping the original appearance. The result is a machine with beautiful lines and the ability to cruise all day in comfort.
Corey Hollifield, proprietor of Phoenix Kustom Auto of Nashville, TN utilized his 20 years of restoration experience and expertise to sandblast and completely rework the body in preparation to paint the Zandy Wagon. Changing it from its original India Ivory and Highland Green to a custom bright red, the Zandy Wagon required major work to a rear left quarter panel, the wheel wells, floor pan and rear spare tire well. Special attention was given to the drip rail to give the car a sleek look.
Grant Rimback of Knoxville, TN is building a 400 hp, small block Chevy engine using a PowerPak MAHLE piston assembly kit complete with low drag rings to replace the anemic stock 283. The engine is backed by a slick shifting, ProFit T5 5-speed overdrive transmission. This 450hp rated modern transmission system was provided courtesy of ProMotion Powertrain of Cookeville, TN, a large distributor of modified 5 and 6-speed Tremec transmissions. This engine and tranny combination will return good performance, excellent fuel mileage and quiet high speed cruising.
Modern upgrades include Cherry Bomb Vortex and Glasspack exhaust system (Loudon, TN), forged, dual coated SBC pistons by MAHLE Motorsport (Fletcher, NC), fuel, water, carburetor and transmission Quick-Connect fittings provided by Jiffy-tite Motorsports (Lancaster, NY) that connect and disconnect in seconds without tools, Howell Engine Development’s EFI wiring harness, Hooker headers via Holley Performance, Rough Country Nitro 9000 shocks, engine gaskets by Flatout (Mundelein, IL), as well as vintage look Spectrum Tires by Toyo (White, GA) and period correct alloy wheels by American Racing (Los Angeles, CA). E3 spark plugs were added to provide improved power and fuel economy. The interior black carpet by Auto Custom Carpets will be topped with ACC supplied embroidered floor mats.
Inside, a trick audio/video sound system is being added to the Zandy Wagon with installation and fabrication provided by Wycked Kreations of Lebanon, TN. Clay Wilson, owner of Wycked Kreations, drew on his 10 plus years of experience in the mobile electronics industry to design an awesome audio and video system, while maintaining the classic lines of the ’57. Using a high quality Earthquake audio system, Wycked Kreations is fabricating hidden compartments in the spacious cargo area to maintain a stock look. A remote switch opens these hidden compartments to reveal a high definition 20” video monitor and a killer set of speakers in the fender wells.
Zan Martin, president of Martin & Company adds, “We’ve long wanted a ’57 Chevy, and with so many clients in the aftermarket and a 15th year anniversary, it seemed like perfect timing to make this project a reality. Our goal is to drive it in the Hot Rod Power Tour and see it on display at SEMA. The relationships we’ve developed from working in the aftermarket for a total of 28 years is what has made this project much more than we’d ever dreamed it to be. Sponsors were excited to get involved at all levels. Best of all, this project will give us a chance to showcase the truly exceptional products manufactured by our clients:
- MAHLE pistons’ forged small block Chevy pistons
- Jiffy-tite Quick-Connects’ high tech leak-proof fluid fittings
- Howell Engine Development’s fully integrated wiring harness
- Cherry Bomb’s high performance exhaust system
- Harmon’s incredible line of Chevy restoration parts
- StrongArm gas charged lift supports for hood and hatch
- Zoom's Performance Clutch
- E3 Spark Plugs for improved power & fuel economy, lower emissions
Randy adds, “With approximately 27,000 of these ever made, and the resurgence of interest by collectors, we knew we needed to act fast to get this car.”
